Effects of Participation in After-School Sport Activity on Aggressive Attitudes of Male Middle School Students

Abstract

|
INTRODUCTION: The purposes of this study were to examine the effects of participation in after-school sport activity on aggressive attitude of male middle school students and to explore its educational value in the identity development of juveniles.
METHOD: For this study, a total 336 students were recruited and divided into two groups(experimental group 171, control group 195). The students in the experimental group participated in 7 different events(eg, soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, badminton ect.) for three months. They responded to the Hostility Scale that was verified through exploratory factor analysis. Self-administration method was used for the response of the Scale. For the analysis of the collected data, t-test was performed by SPSS 18.0.
RESULT: The results of this study were as follows: First, after-school sport activity resulted in the decrease of aggression's level, and statistically significant difference was reported in the resentment as one of the sub-factors. Second, the effects of after-school sport activity on reducing aggression were significantly different in two groups, and this difference resulted from two sub-factors such as suspicion and resentment.
CONCLUSION: The results of this study support the catharsis effect of sport activity, while previous studies contradicted to the results of this study in part. The current study suggests that in the future research various variables(eg. stress in daily lives, peer relationships, academic achievement etc.) that can influence on the aggression should be considered. Furthermore, a new standpoint of the catharsis effect of sport activity is required.
